Healthy Eating Guidelines
I know from personal experience that people eating while depressed can lead to unhealthy habits.
In the depth of my depression I ate myself to almost 300 pounds!
Eating While Depressed
I have always been overweight, buy my thinking was if I'm overweight no one would want to hurt me.
Then as an adult I ate comfort food and my weight just got out-of-control.

People eating food such as cakes, cookies and candy can lead to very unhealthy habits.
I ate comfort foods like this. I thought it would help me feel better and it did, but it caused me to gain weight and in turn that made me more depressed.
Healthful Eating
After my last hospitalization in 2004 ,I learned to keep healthy, yet comforting foods on hand such as:
- Baked chips
- Popcorn
- Raw veggies and low calorie Ranch Dressing
- Baked cracker snacks
These are just a few suggestions for healthful eating. Also, if I were feeling depressed or anxious I would go for a walk or watch something funny on TV or a DVD. This is a great help too! It gets you out of your "moment" and it makes you feel good to do something good for yourself.
Eating to Lose Weight
In February 2005, I finally forgave the abuser I blamed for everything and my life changed. I was able to focus all the attention I gave my abusers on me and my family.

I went on the American Diabetes Diet and lost 30 pounds over a one year period.
Then when I felt like I needed more help and I joined Weight Watchers and lost 35 more pounds.
I have kept it off for four and a half years. I did not look at it as a diet, but as a life change.
When the time comes you too can make you a daily healthy eating plan and it will happen for you too!
But in the mean time you can try healthier foods as comfort foods. It does take a little getting use to, but you will feel much better.
