What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? (PTSD)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can happen when you have gone through or have seen a traumatic event.
A traumatic event is something that is horrible or scary that has happened to you or something you have seen.
When the event is happening you feel your or other peoples lives are in danger.
You may feel scared or feel you have no control over what is happening.
Events that are considered traumatic include:
-
Combat
- Terrorist attacks
- Violent crimes, such as rape, child abuse , or being attacked
- Serious accidents, such as a car wreck
- Natural disaster, such as fire, tornado, flood or earthquake
After the events happen, you may have feelings of being scared, confused or angry. If these feelings don't go away or get worse you may have PTSD.
These systoms may disrupt your life and/or will make it difficult to do daily activities.
PTSD can change how you live your life or your behavior. You may have problems with your spouse or family or just find it hard to be in any relationship.

Children can have PTSD, too. Their symptoms may be different, depending on their ages.
